In the morning, my father requested I join him for breakfast. It wasn’t unheard of for him to do so, but with the previous night’s events so fresh, I worried about his intentions. “Good morning, Imogen,” he said as I entered the room with Anders close behind me. “I thought Sawyer was on your detail this morning.”

“They switch at 10:30,” I reminded him and kissed him on the cheek. My Uncle Kevin was there too. He acted as my father’s strategic advisor. I smiled at him and took a seat to my father’s left.

“Ah, well. This one seems to have lost a fight. I’d rather not look at the weak over my breakfast,” he commented conversationally. “Leave, and have Sawyer report early.”

Anders doesn't hesitate to follow a command from my father. He avoids my gaze as he turns and exits the room. Scoffing, I stared at my father. “Was that necessary?” I asked.

My father placed his spoon down softly on the edge of his plate and met my gaze. “I think so. What kind of message does he send to our enemies, walking around looking like that?”

“Perhaps that even a few bruises won’t keep him from his responsibilities,” I countered.rubbing my fingers along the outer edges of my thumbs.

And I didn’t ask you here to fight.” So this is more than a family breakfast? I nodded once, to let him know I wouldn’t argue. “I’ve been in touch with the Immortuos leader in Delmarva. It’s time I brought you in on our plans,” he added in a kinder tone, lifting his spoon again and eating a bite of his brain porridge.

I don’t interrupt as a servant, not much younger than me, places a plate of scrambled brains and toast in front of me, but my father waits until I pick up my fork to continue. “Their humans are behaving brutally, and their numbers are dwindling. I’ve decided to invite them here.”

“And what do our humans think about that?” I asked, making sure to keep my eyes on my plate and take a few bites. It’s better if he thinks I’m only mildly interested.

“Well, to quote Clark Gable, ‘Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.’” My father laughed as he sipped his coffee. The servant places an omelet of brains and jalapenos in front of my uncle. “All joking aside, I have a meeting today with Sparda to ask for permission.”

“And if he denies you?” I glanced up long enough to see him share a look with my uncle.

“Well, then, at least I asked. And if he says no, I’ll use it against him when we rise up and take this region.” My father chuckled, and I grimaced, but continued to eat my food. “What is it?” he cajoled. “You have an opinion on everything.”

Meeting his gaze, I leaned back in my chair. This was
