In the morning, my father requested I join him for breakfast. It wasnât unheard of for him to do so, but with the previous nightâs events so fresh, I worried about his intentions. âGood morning, Imogen,â he said as I entered the room with Anders close behind me. âI thought Sawyer was on your detail this morning.â
âThey switch at 10:30,â I reminded him and kissed him on the cheek. My Uncle Kevin was there too. He acted as my fatherâs strategic advisor. I smiled at him and took a seat to my fatherâs left.
âAh, well. This one seems to have lost a fight. Iâd rather not look at the weak over my breakfast,â he commented conversationally. âLeave, and have Sawyer report early.â
Anders doesn't hesitate to follow a command from my father. He avoids my gaze as he turns and exits the room. Scoffing, I stared at my father. âWas that necessary?â I asked.
My father placed his spoon down softly on the edge of his plate and met my gaze. âI think so. What kind of message does he send to our enemies, walking around looking like that?â
âPerhaps that even a few bruises wonât keep him from his responsibilities,â I countered.rubbing my fingers along the outer edges of my thumbs.
âEnough, Imogen.â The edge in his voice sends a chill up my spine and I sit straighter. âIâve placated you plenty where he is concerned. And I didnât ask you here to fight.â So this is more than a family breakfast? I nodded once, to let him know I wouldnât argue. âIâve been in touch with the Immortuos leader in Delmarva. Itâs time I brought you in on our plans,â he added in a kinder tone, lifting his spoon again and eating a bite of his brain porridge.
I donât interrupt as a servant, not much younger than me, places a plate of scrambled brains and toast in front of me, but my father waits until I pick up my fork to continue. âTheir humans are behaving brutally, and their numbers are dwindling. Iâve decided to invite them here.â
âAnd what do our humans think about that?â I asked, making sure to keep my eyes on my plate and take a few bites. Itâs better if he thinks Iâm only mildly interested.
âWell, to quote Clark Gable, âFrankly my dear, I donât give a damn.ââ My father laughed as he sipped his coffee. The servant places an omelet of brains and jalapenos in front of my uncle. âAll joking aside, I have a meeting today with Sparda to ask for permission.â
âAnd if he denies you?â I glanced up long enough to see him share a look with my uncle.
âWell, then, at least I asked. And if he says no, Iâll use it against him when we rise up and take this region.â My father chuckled, and I grimaced, but continued to eat my food. âWhat is it?â he cajoled. âYou have an opinion on everything.â
Meeting his gaze, I leaned back in my chair. This was
